“The Ducat Man, Hotel Kaiserworth.” This is a sixteenth-century sculpture on the corner of a very prominent early-modern building in Goslar, Germany (an old mining town and member of the Hanseatic League, located in the Harz mountains), showing a small naked man shitting coins. I’ve always found this image fascinating for what it says about early modern culture — both in terms of ideas about money and ideas about propriety. Via leigaaman.
